Gout is a form of arthritis that typically causes pain in the feet, ankles and knees, but can affect any joint in the body. It is a progressive disease that is caused when uric acid crystallizes, builds up in the blood stream and then deposits itself in joints. One common joint that it attacks is the joint at the base of the big toe. More than one million Americans are affected by gout.

Symptoms and Treatment

Symptoms of gout include redness, heat, swelling and pain in the affected area. Some patients have experienced intense pain and acute tenderness in the joint.

Studies show that gout can be caused by eating rich foods and an unhealthy diet high in fats and proteins. Many patients who suffer from gout are overweight.

To treat gout, we first recommend eating a well-balanced diet and changing your lifestyle. Some foods to avoid are certain seafood’s (shrimp, sardines, mussels, anchovies and scallops), organ meat (liver, kidneys, heart) and certain vegetables (mushrooms, peas, cauliflower and dark green leafy vegetables). Alcohol, which can lead to high uric acid levels in the body, should also be avoided if you have gout.

Over–the-counter Ibuprofen can be taken for immediate pain relief. We can devise a treatment plan consisting of prescription medication such as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that will lessen the symptoms of acute attacks and help prevent future attacks.

Recurrent Gout

Patients who have recurrent gout will experience a second attack that typically will last longer than the first. The recurrence may take weeks, months or even years to occur. Each time gout reoccurs, more damage is done to your joints – causing deformities and endless pain.
